History
The Saxony is a 7-story apartment building located at 250 West 82nd Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It was designed by Emery Roth, a prominent architect who is known for designing many of the city's most iconic buildings, including the San Remo and the Beresford. The Saxony was Roth's first apartment building, and it was completed in 1899.
The Saxony is built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, and it features a red brick exterior with white limestone accents. The building has a two-story rusticated stone base that houses retail stores on the Broadway side. The residential entrance is located on the less public 82nd Street side, and it is flanked by tall lampposts and sheltered by a glass-and-iron canopy.
The Saxony was originally designed to appeal to the wealthy and fashionable residents of the Upper West Side. The building's apartments were large and luxurious, and they featured modern amenities such as steam heat, hot water, and electric lighting.
